Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa has tasked the Committee on Physical Infrastructure to probe the recent collision that involved a train and a bus at Namumira railway crossing in Mukono Municipality.
On 10h July 2026, a passenger train was involved in an accident with a bus transporting students of Mwebaza High School who were headed to Jinja on a study trip, leaving a teacher dead and several others injured.
While chairing plenary sitting on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, Tayebwa underscored the need for a parliamentary audit of the accident.
“When the train is crossing, we should block the roads and not a traffic officer standing in the middle of the road, so that we do not lose more people,” he added.
The Deputy Speaker’s remarks followed concerns raised by Hon. Robert Maseruka (NUP, Mukono County South).

Maseruka called for integrated early warning systems along railway crossings as a way of mitigating such accidents.
“In many parts of the world, railway crossings are treated with priority. We need physical infrastructure control that should be placed on these crossings,” he said.
Maseruka also called for mass education on railway safety protocols adding that those found violating the protocols should be prosecuted.
“Safety is a shared responsibility; we must empower traffic police to enforce penalties on any driver who ignores railway safety protocols,” he said.
The MP also called for a safety audit of railway crossings countrywide and provision of resources to modernise the crossings.

The Second Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Crispus Kiyonga said that the matter has been discussed in Cabinet and government is taking necessary steps to rectify the situation.
