Members of Parliament have voiced their concerns to the government, calling for remedial action over the ravaging floods arising from heavy rains experienced in different parts of the country.
Leading the crusade, Speaker Anita Among, while chairing plenary on Wednesday, 03 September 2025, said transport infrastructure and livelihoods have been severely affected by the recent rains in Eastern Uganda, particularly the districts of Kapelebyong, Otuke, Alebtong, Amuria, Abim, Bukedea and some parts of Soroti.
“The Alito Bridge that connects Abim to Obalanga in Kapelebyong has been washed away, while Moroto Bridge remains at risk. Gardens have been submerged by floods and the affected population may face starvation,” Among said.
She added: “I urge the Minister in charge of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees to evaluate the situation and take appropriate remedial action.”
Hon. Francis Zaake (NUP, Mityana Municipality) said the heavy rains have not only ravaged the Eastern region, but also some parts of Mityana in the Central region.

“Busimbi Division in Mityana has been seriously affected, and I also urge government to step up so that they give relief, as many homesteads were destroyed by strong rains that happened last month,” Zaake said.
Manjiya County Member of Parliament, Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, called for quick intervention on the bridge that connects Manafwa, Namisindwa districts and Kenya to Bududa Hospital before it is washed away by rain.
“Soon that bridge will be carried away, and this will mean the matter of disaster in Bududa will be exacerbated,” Nambeshe said.
Hon. Ephraim Biraaro (NRM, Buhweju West County) expressed frustration with government’s cold response towards matters of disaster, saying on 20 September 2023, heavy rains ravaged infrastructure in Buhweju, specifically the Katerera-Rwobuyenje Road, but government has not come to their rescue as the road remains blocked to date.
“Government has sort of neglected us; we are suffering on behalf of government and communities are equally suffering with no businesses and connectivity. I request that government responds to whatever appeal we make in this House,” he said.
The Speaker directed that issues of disaster be debated at the next sitting of the House on Thursday, 04 September 2025 in the presence of the responsible ministers.
