Speaker, Jacob Marksons Oboth has pledged diligence, fairness and equity during his stewardship of the 12th Parliament.
“As your Speaker, I bear a profound obligation to elevate and empower all of you to effectively execute your mandate of representation, oversight, legislation and appropriation,” he said, adding, “On behalf of the leadership of Parliament, I appreciate your decision to bestow your trust in our leadership.”
Oboth made the commitment during his maiden communication during a fully attended plenary sitting on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
He also said that he will ensure favorable work conditions for lawmakers, to enable them execute their mandate.
“As a Chairperson of the Parliamentary Commission, I will ensure a favorable environment for evidence based legislation and responsiveness to the aspirations of the masses that we represent,” Oboth said.
The Parliamentary Commission is the top most decision making organ of Parliament.
The Speaker urged the lawmakers to ensure their availability to serve the people as well as prepare adequately for Parliamentary work.
“I also call upon you to exercise humility and modesty at all times as we strive to realise a people centered legislature,” he said.
Oboth and his Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa were elected as Speaker and Deputy, respectively, on 25 May 2025 at Kololo ceremonial grounds.
